I am always excited to find new ways to incorporate the ocean into my life. After all, I was born on a beach. I have never been to the Pacific Ocean, but I have spent countless hours on my deck in the morning and evening watching the sun rise and set and the waves. After all the research I have done on the subject, I have found that the best way to “get” the ocean is to experience it.
The ocean is the greatest source of information that ever came to me. The ocean is the world’s greatest resource, so it is the only way to be sure that you have access to the most valuable information you can possibly know about this world. I am sure you can find some amazing food on the sea floor, but not all of it is for you.
I have been studying ocean acidification for over a decade, trying to understand the ocean’s reactions to this phenomenon. I came to realize that the ocean is more than just water. It is also a living organism. Like the Earth, the ocean is always changing. It cycles through four primary phases in its life cycle: the phytoplankton, zooplankton, demersal fish, and pelagic whales.
So, the ocean itself is a living entity, and that changes things. As the ocean transitions from a phytoplankton to a zooplankton, there are very few places that are really safe from the ocean’s acidification. In the past this happened in the tropics, but as the oceans turn more acidic, this may be happening in places that are not only warmer but also more acidic.
The ocean’s transition from phytoplankton to zooplankton is also happening to the ocean’s surface. Sea ice is disappearing and melting, which means the ocean is becoming more acidic.
This is bad for oceans, it is bad for you, and it will eventually cause a catastrophic event somewhere. But it’s also good for sea life. When the ocean transitions from a phytoplankton to a zooplankton, that means less sea life exists on the ocean surface. This may be good for it because that means more sea life can inhabit the ocean.
The good news is that sea life is actually still alive in the ocean, and it appears to be surviving.
